Hawaii Kindergarten Cutoff & Enrollment (Oahu)

Not sure if your keiki is old enough for kindergarten? Check Hawaii’s July 31 cutoff in one tap, see exactly what to bring to register, when to sign up, and how a Geographic Exception works if you want a school outside your area.

Is my keiki old enough for kindergarten?

July 31 cutoff — a child must turn 5 on or before July 31 to start that fall.

This is Hawaii’s public-school rule; some private schools set their own cutoff.

What to bring to register

  • Birth certificate (proof of age)
  • Proof of residency (utility bill, lease agreement, or other official document showing current address)
  • Valid photo ID of parent/guardian
  • Student Enrollment Form plus Supplemental Kindergarten Enrollment Form
  • Home Language Survey (required for all newly enrolled students)
  • Student's Health Record: required immunizations, tuberculosis (TB) clearance, and a physical exam within 1 year of first attendance

When to register

Opens: Early January (for the fall school year)
HIDOE enrolls students year-round and there is no single statewide "opens" date; new-year kindergarten registration is handled by each home school and generally begins in early January (aligning with the Jan 1 geographic-exception window). Use the SchoolSite Locator to find your home school and enroll online or in person.

Want a school outside your area? (Geographic Exception)

Apply: January 1 – March 1
A geographic exception (GE) is DOE permission for a child to attend a public school other than the designated home school for the area where the family resides. Under Hawaii law all students are assigned to their residential-area school, but a GE request can allow attendance at another school. Complete the Geographic Exception Request Form (Chapter 13-1). If the child already attends a HIDOE school, submit it to the current school; if not (e.g., incoming kindergarteners or private/out-of-state students), submit it to next year's home school. If more applications are received than there are seats, a lottery is held the first Friday of April. Official GE info →

Rules and dates can change — confirm with the Hawaii DOE (official enrollment page). Last checked August 2026.
